Barrett’s oesophagus is a premalignant condition which precedes oesophageal adenocarcinoma. Oesophageal adenocarcinoma has one of the fastest rising incidences in high-income countries and, as it is usually diagnosed after metastasis, patients have a poor prognosis. As yet, no biomarkers have been approved to aid early diagnosis and the molecular mechanisms which mediate dysplastic progression are largely unknown.
I am working in the Ladbury group to elucidate the role of receptor tyrosine kinases in driving progression of Barrett’s oesophagus. We are developing patient-derived organoids to model the oesophagus and will use this system to identify the changes in cell signalling which mediate dysplastic progression.
