My interests in inherited eye diseases pose a series of research questions that can only be answered through cellular modelling in iPSC- and patient-derived retinal organoids and RPE. Similarly my work on disorders of the brain can reveal the primary genetic lesions affecting brain development and function, but just how these lesions cause the conditions to which genetic analysis has linked them can only be answered through cellular and organoid modelling. Tooth disorders cannot (yet) be modelled in tissue culture derived model systems, but they are often associated with defects in other organs and body systems which have well established organoid culture protocols.
